So, what exactly does POV mean? POV is an abbreviation of the English term ‘Point Of View’. In Dutch, this translates as ‘gezichtspunt’ or ‘standpunt’. The term is mainly used in videos on TikTok and can be incorporated into a hashtag or used as the subject itself. Depending on the type of video in which this word is used, the meaning of POV can vary.

The aim of the term ‘POV’ remains the same: to place the person watching the video within a situation. The viewer then feels as though they are actually there. The video then shows you what someone ordering a coffee would see. This creates a ‘through the eyes of’ effect. POV videos sometimes depict real-life situations, but they often feature fictional scenarios as well. Think of mini-horror films, elaborate sketches or cosplay.

Using POV to share your opinion

The hashtag #POV is also used to indicate ‘this is my point of view’, ‘this is how I see it’. In this way, an opinion is shared, rather than a point of view.
