TikTok advertising has really taken off since the social media platform experienced explosive growth in 2020. The social ad specialists at Traffic Today are happy to help you devise a strategy that best suits your target audience. By combining knowledge and experience, we ensure that your TikTok adverts are a smart addition to your marketing strategy. Here, we explain how we do it!

Why TikTok Advertising?

TikTok is a social -media platform where short videos can be shared. The app was launched in 2012, but only became truly successful in 2017, when Bytedance acquired the app Musical.ly and merged it with its own app: TikTok. Since then, TikTok has become an integral part of the social media landscape and has grown into a service that is of interest not only to creators but also to marketers. There are, in fact, many interesting opportunities for your business on TikTok. The app emphasises individuality: its motto is, after all, “Don’t create adverts, create TikToks”. Our digital marketers know exactly what it takes to set up a successful TikTok campaign. Get in touch with one of our marketers and discover where your opportunities lie!

Selling via TikTok Shop

From 15 June 2026, TikTok Shop will be officially launched in the Netherlands. Whereas social media channels previously served mainly as a shop window to drive traffic to your own online shop, the platform itself is now becoming the shop. Find out how to get started and what you need to bear in mind in our blog.

Who’s on TikTok?

TikTok has long since ceased to be the preserve of teenagers. Although the platform remains particularly popular amongst young people – especially Gen Z (aged 18–24) – its user base is rapidly expanding across the board. People in their thirties and forties, as well as businesses, are also finding their way to TikTok. On average, users are highly active and spend more than an hour a day on the platform. They are looking for entertainment, inspiration and a sense of connection, and love short, creative content with a high degree of authenticity. Brands that dare to stand out and follow trends, in particular, can build an engaged audience here and make a real impact.

How do you set up a TikTok campaign?

Setting up a TikTok campaign offers plenty of opportunities to raise awareness of your brand in a creative and impactful way. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll take you through the process, from setting your objectives to launching your first advert. This way, you can ensure that your campaign not only stands out but also delivers real results.

1. Enable the advertising feature within your paid TikTok account
Before you can start advertising, you need to create a TikTok account for your business. You can do this in the TikTok Ads Manager, which is similar to Facebook’s. Once your account has been verified, you can get started.
2. Create and install the TikTok pixel on your website
To track the performance of your adverts effectively, you need to implement the TikTok pixel. This is a piece of code that you embed in the back-end of your website. By using UTM codes, you can see exactly where users are coming from, how they arrived at your site, and so on.
3. Create a campaign
Next, it’s time to create your first TikTok campaign in the Ads Manager of the social media platform. Here, you can choose from three advertising objectives: traffic, conversions or app installs. Whilst the options are somewhat more limited than on Facebook and Instagram, they are no less effective. When it comes to budgeting, you can choose between a daily budget or a lifetime budget, which cleverly spreads your advertising spend over the duration of the campaign. You can also set up an A/B test, allowing you to test two similar TikTok videos within the same campaign.
4. Create an ad group
In this part of the campaign, you decide where your TikToks should appear. Here, you can choose between automatic placements or selective placements. There is also a special option where TikTok creates variations of your videos to generate more engagement. You also decide on the desired targeting locations, age groups, languages and interests.
5. Create an advert
Once you’ve laid the foundations for your campaign, it’s time to upload your advertising material. Make sure you use the optimal specifications so that your videos can be viewed in the best possible way by your target audience. You can also view a preview to ensure your visuals are just right. In addition, you have the option here to add up to 100 characters of text to support your video. You can also add a CTA.
6. Analyse TikTok Ads
Once your video content is live, it’s important to keep an eye on the ‘rates’. You can do this by analysing your TikTok ads. Use the TikTok Ads Manager to find out which videos convert well and which TikToks generate few clicks. Advertising on Social media is an ongoing process that doesn’t stop once your ad is live!

What works well on TikTok?

If you want to use TikTok advertising effectively, there are several things you need to bear in mind. TikTok places great value on authenticity: a video with high production values does not necessarily perform better than an amateurish one. In fact, an amateurish video might actually be the smartest choice. As well as authenticity, TikTok also emphasises creativity. Any product can be marketed creatively, but finding the right way to do this isn’t always easy. We’re happy to help you with this. We don’t just devise a campaign strategy; we’re also happy to assist you with the execution of the advert.

TikTok Advertising in 2026

Advertising on TikTok in 2026 is more important than ever for brands seeking to reach a young and engaged audience. The platform continues to evolve rapidly, partly thanks to advanced AI technologies that make adverts even smarter and more personalised. Thanks to AI, you can now target audiences even more precisely, optimise content and automate campaigns, enabling you to get more out of your budget. Whether you opt for creative In-Feed Ads, eye-catching TopView campaigns or interactive Branded Hashtag Challenges, TikTok and AI together offer powerful tools to promote your brand authentically and effectively. Anyone who makes smart use of both TikTok and AI in 2026 will be taking a major step towards growth, brand awareness and conversion.

Types of TikTok adverts

There are various ways to utilise TikTok advertising. Each advert takes a different form and therefore requires a different tone of voice and approach. In your TikTok strategy, you can choose to focus entirely on one type of advert, but combining several types can also be successful. It all depends on your objectives – each ad type contributes to these in a different way. We’ll outline the options for you.

In-Feed Video
Every TikTok user has their own feed. This feed displays TikToks that match the content the user likes. Through In-Feed Video adverts, you can ensure your content appears amongst these TikToks. This option is highly effective, as it isn’t immediately obvious that it’s an advert. Only after a few seconds does this become apparent: a button appears, behind which you can place a call to action. You can easily link this advert to your website or online shop.
Top View Ads
TopView Ads are premium adverts that appear first as soon as someone opens the app. They take up the entire screen, play automatically with sound and thus ensure maximum attention. Due to their exclusive placement – usually one per user per day – they are perfect for creating significant brand awareness in a short space of time.
Branded hashtag challenge
The Branded Hashtag Challenge encourages users to create their own content around a brand-specific hashtag. TikTok promotes this challenge via a dedicated page and in-app banners, generating high levels of engagement and viral potential. This format works exceptionally well in combination with influencers and is ideal for building a community and strengthening brand interaction.
Branded effects
Branded Effects enables brands to develop their own augmented reality filters or effects that users can apply to their videos. These can range from simple 2D or 3D effects to interactive, gamified filters. These effects are usually available for a limited period and offer a creative way to boost engagement and make the brand experience more playful.
Spark Ads
Spark Ads offer the opportunity to promote existing organic TikTok videos – whether your own or those of others, such as influencers – as adverts. This preserves the authentic feel of TikTok content whilst increasing visibility. Spark Ads are ideal for boosting influencer and user-generated content campaigns, driving greater reach, engagement and conversion.
Collection Ads
Collection Ads are particularly useful for e-commerce. These adverts combine videos with a scrollable product gallery within TikTok, allowing users to shop easily without leaving the app. They often utilise product feeds and offer a mobile shopping experience optimised for conversion.

TikTok Advertising Results

One reason TikTok advertising is so successful is that results are very easy to measure. TikTok itself has a Business Centre, where you can view general statistics about your followers, as well as the performance metrics of the adverts you’ve posted. It’s easy to act on these statistics: what worked in previous posts and what didn’t? We’d be happy to help you utilise these statistics and turn them into a successful advert!

Tips for TikTok Advertising

To help you get started with TikTok advertising, here are a few tips.

Branded hashtag challenge
A Branded Hashtag challenge is an excellent way to build brand awareness. With this challenge, you challenge your followers to carry out a specific action related to your product or service. By linking your name to this challenge, TikTok users will spread your name without expecting anything in return. You can choose to combine this with a competition: for example, the person who performs your challenge best could receive a subscription to your service.
Be authentic and stand out
TikTok users appreciate content that is natural, playful and relatable, rather than overly polished or commercial. Create adverts that resemble real TikTok videos: use popular music, trends and challenges, and tell a story that resonates with your target audience. This ensures that your advert not only stands out, but is also better received and shared.
Cross-media work
In doing so, you’ll utilise multiple social media platforms. To maximise the success of all these channels, you’ll adopt a cross-media approach. This involves creating connections between these channels. For example, include a link to your Instagram page in your TikTok posts, or let your Facebook followers know that you’re also active on TikTok.

TikTok influencers

TikTok has a huge number of users: most are simply viewers, but there are also many users who regularly post videos. There are also various Social Influencers active on TikTok. You can engage these influencers to promote your product. An influencer promotes your product in exchange for an agreed fee or another type of deal, such as free use of your product. TikTok strongly encourages this marketing method and has even developed a feature to make it easier to find influencers: the Creator Marketplace. Here, you’ll not only find various influencers, but also examples of other adverts that have used this method.

Targeting options for TikTok advertising

Do you want to strengthen the bond between your brand and your audience? A major advantage of TikTok advertising is that you can target your audience very specifically. Just as you’re used to with other social platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, you can customise your ad exactly as you wish before posting. There are various filters available for TikTok advertising, such as location and age, but more specific filters such as interests and online behaviour can also be used. Traffic Today knows exactly what it takes to target successfully: our social ad specialists take into account not only your target audience, but also what your target audience is engaging with on TikTok.
