Amazon Marketplace: an up-and-coming marketplace in the Netherlands, but one that has been active and highly popular abroad for years. Amazon is a major player, particularly in the US and Germany, and in other countries it is working hard to gain more market share – as is the case in the Netherlands. This means that more and more Dutch sellers are taking advantage of the opportunities available to them on the Amazon marketplace.
Curious about your opportunities?

Although Amazon is still lagging behind bol in the Netherlands, most Dutch people are familiar with Amazon. Globally, it is a major player in the marketplace sector, which in itself brings significant advantages.
Amazon is, in fact, an ideal marketplace to use if you want to make your product range easily accessible abroad. As a marketplace, Amazon operates in various countries, and it allows you to easily ‘copy’ your product range to another country.
Furthermore, Amazon is an open marketplace, so you can easily register as a seller. Please bear in mind, however, that the registration process may take longer than is the case with, for example, Bol. Amazon wants to know exactly how your business operates and will therefore often ask you to provide a lot of documentation about your company. As a result, it often takes a little longer before you can actually start selling.
There are many ins and outs to selling on Amazon, which can make it difficult to realise the marketplace’s full potential. To sell on Amazon, there are a number of things you need to have and provide. For example, Amazon wants to know how your business is structured and who they allow onto their platform. This protects both sellers and customers. To this end, they ask for your business registration details, including your VAT number, and they carry out an identity check. For this, you’ll need a valid passport or identity document.
Please note that the VAT numbers you need to provide must correspond to the countries in which you sell. Do you sell in Germany, France and the Netherlands? If so, you’ll need a VAT number for the Amazon marketplace in each of those countries.
Amazon requires a credit card for payments; international credit cards are also accepted.
You must also comply with a country’s sales requirements. For example, you must have EPR registration in Germany. EPR stands for ‘Extended Producer Responsibility’ and means that, as a seller, you pay for the ‘waste’ you place on the German market. This includes cardboard, plastic and polystyrene from packaging. You should therefore familiarise yourself with the legislation of the country in which you intend to sell, in order to avoid heavy fines.
You can obtain EPR registration in Germany from the Stiftung Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister. Without this registration, your company risks fines and legal consequences, such as a ban on product sales. EPR registration was implemented in Germany as part of the Verpackungsgesetz (Packaging Act), which came into force on 1 January 2019. This initiative was launched to oblige producers to take responsibility for recycling costs and to promote more sustainable packaging practices.
Once your products are live on Amazon, it’s important to optimise them to secure top organic rankings. But Amazon also offers other opportunities to generate more sales. For example, you can set up various Amazon- Advertising campaigns to reach the right target audience within Amazon. Use Sponsored Products to draw more attention to specific products, utilise Sponsored Brands to build brand awareness, or use Sponsored Display to promote your Amazon products both within and outside the marketplace. The possibilities within Amazon’ Advertising s are endless, offering you plenty of opportunities, but you also need to know what your goal is to avoid unnecessary costs.
Furthermore, the Amazon marketplace also runs promotions you can take part in, such as Prime Day. But you can also create your own promotions by using coupons or vouchers, for example. This gives you visibility on multiple pages within Amazon and earns you a prominent discount label.
Amazon is working hard to gain more market share in the Netherlands. However, it has not yet achieved the status enjoyed by Bol.com. Whilst Amazon has a global presence and the strength to expand into other countries, Bol.com operates solely in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Both marketplaces adopt an open strategy, meaning that virtually any seller is accepted. The main difference between these two sales channels lies in the documentation that must be provided. Amazon requires significantly more information than Bol.com, which means the registration process can take longer.
The Amazon marketplace stands out from Bol.com because it is ideal for expanding into international markets. It offers an accessible way to easily showcase your products to a new market abroad! This means more people will discover your products, increasing the likelihood of more sales.
Although Amazon and Bol.com are two major marketplaces, there are often opportunities on other marketplaces too. These might include other broad-based marketplaces or, conversely, specialist marketplaces to give your business a boost. This could be in the Netherlands or in another country. In the Netherlands, marketplaces such as Blokker, fonQ or Decathlon could be of interest. Are you looking to expand into Germany, for example? Then Kaufland or Otto might be a good fit.
All marketplaces, including the others, have their own target audience and a different product range. It is therefore important to identify the opportunities available to your business within the various marketplaces. Are you finding this a bit tricky? Traffic Today will be happy to help you identify these opportunities.
