Summary
The percentage of people using Google as their search engine fluctuates annually. In the Netherlands, 89 per cent of desktop users rely on the search engine giant, whilst this figure stands at 98 per cent amongst mobile users. We can hear you wondering which search engines account for the remaining percentage points. That’s why we’ve written this blog about the other search engines besides Google. A little hint? You’ll never have heard of most of them, and we’re only covering 10, because there are actually more than 50 ‘search engines’ worldwide.
Bing is the second-largest search engine in the world and offers a stunning visual search experience that brings search queries to life. An interesting feature is the ability to play videos directly on the search results page. With a market share of 3.19 per cent, this is an attractive advertising platform for businesses wishing to reach a different target audience.
Yahoo Search ranks third in this list of search engines. Yahoo has always been known for its email services, but is also praised for its news coverage. Yahoo Search is set as the default search engine on some computers.
Within China, Baidu is regarded as the leading search engine. With a population of 1.4 billion, it is hardly surprising that this search engine features on this list. When you land on Baidu, you’re immediately greeted by Chinese characters!
It’s a thorn in the side of every marketer, but DuckDuckGo does not track user data. This is one of the reasons why the platform is less appealing to businesses. However, for a user who values their privacy, this is the perfect platform.
Whilst Baidu has a large market share in Russia, Yandex has been the market leader there for years. You can use it for maps and news, as well as for standard search queries. The platform also supports many languages.
The search industry is currently undergoing a major transformation, with chatbots now available to answer your questions. One website where this has been the case for some time is Ask (you wouldn’t expect it ). Previously, you could ask your questions here, but from 2023 onwards, the search engine will be using results from its big brother, Bing.
As you’ll know by now, Baidu (China) and Yandex (Russia) are major players in their respective countries. For South Koreans, Naver is their search engine. South Koreans are only too happy to use this search engine to book trips to other parts of the world, order goods and find answers to specific questions.
AOL, formerly America Online, has integrated its search engine with its online services, such as email, news and entertainment. This means that users can enjoy an all-in-one experience, allowing them to search for information whilst simultaneously accessing other AOL services. This convenience and seamless integration make AOL an attractive choice for loyal AOL users.
The Czech Republic and Slovakia. Yes, really – those are indeed the countries whose daily search queries are processed by Seznam. Seznam has a very local focus. Search queries are strongly tailored to the region you’re in. Exactly what some people need!
In addition to these 10 search engines, the list includes Yippy, Amazon A9, OpenVerse (CC Search), Gibiru, Search Encrypt, Searx, StartPage, Swisscows, Ecosia, Gigablast, Lycos, Mojeek, Neeva, Qmamu, WolframAlpha, WebCrawler, MetaGer, Qwant, You, Oscobo, Infinity Search, YEP and Anoox are also among the existing search engines worldwide. But we’ll spare you a detailed explanation of this, as we don’t think there’s much chance you’ll make the switch! Do you need help setting up campaigns via Google? We’d be happy to help you with that!
