Good copywriting: how do you go about it? That’s a question we’re often asked here at Traffic Today too. There are various writing techniques and methods that can help you raise the quality of your content to a higher level. Today, we’re highlighting the Inverted Pyramid method. What is it, and how can you apply it yourself in your own writing?

What is the Inverted Pyramid method?

The Inverted Pyramid method consists of three components. These are:

  • The lead: this is the first paragraph of your article. It is important here to grab the reader’s attention. What does the article cover, and why is it worth reading on? For SEO purposes, the main keyword should, of course, also appear in this paragraph.
  • The body: this section may consist of several paragraphs. Here, you explore the topic in greater depth and highlight the key information. You can use case studies, examples and statistics to add further substance to this section. You can also enhance this section with quotes, videos, photos and similar elements.
  • The tail: although many people often conclude a text with a summary, the closing section goes beyond this. As well as briefly summarising the article, it is also advisable to offer assistance with any queries. Furthermore, you can also include a link to a similar article here.

Quick wins

Now that you know more about the structure of the Inverted Pyramid method, we’ll share a few quick wins that you can put into practice straight away.

What is the focus?

Always decide what you want to focus on in the article. When writing SEO content, you always have one main keyword that your article is based on. Of course, you can touch on subtopics, but always ensure that the main topic remains central.

Determine the sub-keywords

As well as a main keyword, you’ll always have secondary keywords that you can incorporate into the article. Use tools such as SEMrush to find the secondary keywords that match the main keyword.

Write for scanners

Are you looking for specific information? Then you’ll no doubt recognise that you tend to scan the text first, before actually reading the article. When you write a text yourself, it’s worth bearing in mind that other people will scan your text in the same way. So make use of relevant headings and subheadings to convince these ‘scanners’ that they should read your text.

Make use of Bucket Brigades

  • This is how it works
  • You might think that …, but in reality…
  • In any case

These are all examples of so-called ‘Bucket Brigades’. They are short snippets of text designed to grab the reader’s attention. Bucket Brigades are particularly effective in long articles, as they keep the reader engaged.

Ask questions in headings

When people want to know more about a topic, they always have questions they’d like answered. Incorporate these questions into your subheadings. This, in turn, makes people more likely to read your article rather than just skim it.

Why is it a good idea to use the Inverted Pyramid method?

By applying the Inverted Pyramid method, you can better serve your readers, ultimately making them more likely to take action. This could include exploring the website further, getting in touch or even making a conversion.
