Inbound and outbound marketing are terms you’re seeing more and more often. As there is sometimes confusion about exactly which activities fall under each term, we’ll explore this in more detail in this blog.

Inbound vs outbound marketing

To clearly distinguish between the two concepts, we’ll first explain the meaning of both inbound and outbound marketing. Later in this blog, we’ll also look specifically at the differences between these two concepts. Finally, we’ll discuss which approach is best suited to promoting your product or service.

Meaning of inbound marketing

Inbound marketing is a relatively new form of marketing that puts the (potential) customer at the centre. The aim of this form of marketing is to generate leads by inspiring people and providing answers to questions that are on the target audience’s minds. By distributing valuable content, consumers are naturally drawn to the company. Inbound marketing is therefore specifically about earning attention. Because you can help consumers with your content, they find their way to you and, with the right strategy, you can also convert them. Inbound marketing revolves around sharing content. This can be done in many different ways. Writing blogs, creating videos and optimising web content and product pages for search engines (SEO), for example. These are all techniques that are successfully used to generate leads organically.

Outbound marketing

Most people recognise outbound marketing as the traditional form of marketing, where a company reaches out to the consumer. Actively approaching the target audience with various messages serves as a means of generating leads.Outbound marketing often involves paid promotion. You don’t wait for consumers to come to you; instead, you go to them. This form of marketing can be very effective in the short term, but it does cost a lot of money. In outbound marketing, you therefore actively seek out new leads yourself. There are various methods for doing this, the best known of which is traditional advertising. Telemarketing, Google AdWords, Facebook adverts and email marketing are also forms of outbound marketing.

Differences between inbound and outbound marketing

The main difference between these two forms of marketing is the way in which you aim to reach the customer. With inbound marketing, you do this by distributing valuable content that naturally guides the consumer towards your product or service, whilst with outbound marketing, you actively seek out the customer. With inbound marketing, you can be sure that the people who come across your content are looking for something. They often want to find an answer to their question. If you are the one who can provide that answer, there’s a good chance the visitor will stick around and perhaps convert. This approach to marketing is very sustainable: there’s a good chance this customer will return to you later. In short: outbound marketing says ‘Buy my product!’, whilst inbound marketing says ‘I can help you with your queries.’

Which option should I choose?

It is difficult to say which form of marketing is most suitable for you. This depends on various factors. Every situation is different and requires a different approach. Of course, there are guidelines. For short-term campaigns or immediate results, outbound marketing is the most suitable. For a long-term strategy, where the company aims to become an authority in its field, inbound marketing is more appropriate. The two forms complement each other perfectly. An inbound marketing strategy provides a solid foundation for the further expansion of marketing activities. To build on this solid foundation, you can then utilise, for example, Google AdWords or sponsored posts on Facebook – well-known forms of outbound marketing.

Rolling out an inbound marketing strategy or an outbound marketing strategy

In this blog, we have discussed two forms of marketing. Inbound marketing is a relatively new form of marketing in which you naturally guide the consumer towards your product or service using valuable content. With outbound marketing, you actively seek out leads yourself. Unlike with inbound marketing, you do not know whether the customer is actually looking for your message. You should therefore always make a deliberate choice between a clear inbound marketing strategy and an outbound marketing strategy.
