5 misconceptions about brand positioning

Summary

Many brands think that positioning is only for large companies or that you have to appeal to everyone, but making the right choices actually makes you more recognisable. Positioning goes beyond simply occupying a space: it captures your identity, promise and experience, and helps build an emotional connection with your target audience.

“Shouldn’t we do something about brand positioning?” — For many companies, this question is as relevant as it is daunting. Because once you start, you need to be firmly grounded to avoid getting caught up in persistent misconceptions. So let’s take a look at the biggest pitfalls and identify what you really need to bear in mind when you start working on your brand positioning.

1. Positioning is only for major brands

The market is often dominated by prominent brands with deep pockets. But that does not mean they are the only ones who need to focus on positioning. Almost every company has a great story to tell. From start-ups to family businesses — there is always a ‘why’ at the heart of an organisation.

2. Brand positioning is a one-off exercise

Defining your brand position is not a task you simply tick off and forget about. Brands, just like the markets in which they operate, evolve. For example, with the rise of sustainability, many brands have reconsidered their positioning to integrate environmental awareness into their brand identity. As a brand, you must constantly remain critical of how you position yourself. Does it still fit with our internal culture? Does it still resonate with our audience?

Moreover, there is no shame in realising that your brand positioning is outdated in today’s society. In fact, it is a sign of sound self-reflection and responsibility. So remain critical and make the necessary adjustments here and there when developments call for it.

3. It’s all about the logo and the slogan

Whilst an effective logo and a catchy slogan are often the most visible elements of your brand positioning, they represent only a fraction of the overall brand experience. Apple’s “Think Different” is not just a slogan; it reflects their ethos of innovation in technology and design.

Moreover, Apple is not just any random example. This company has mastered Sinek’s circle and transformed it into a formidable sales machine. In everything Apple puts out there, you can feel ‘Think Different’. This goes far beyond just a logo and slogan – or ‘pay-off’. Ensure that your positioning is tangible within your company and in everything you put out there.

4. Brand positioning is the same as your USP

A USP is certainly important when discussing your brand positioning, but it goes beyond that. A USP might be that a clothing brand uses only organic cotton. But the positioning then focuses on a broader mission, such as promoting sustainable fashion and ethical consumption by making a conscious choice affordable.

5. “If I target everyone, I’ll reach more clients”

This may seem like a sound strategy, but in reality it often leads to diluted messaging. A cosmetics company that develops products for every skin type, age and gender may struggle with positioning. But a brand that focuses specifically on organic skincare using only natural products has a clearly defined position. Add a touch of nuance to this that truly sets you apart from competitors in the same market, and you become unique.

Often, taking a stand is therefore more effective than not taking sides at all. No brand is ‘for everyone’. There will always be a group that drops out due to budget constraints, values and beliefs, or other motivations that do not align with your business. But that’s not a problem. Make sure you’re there for everyone who does connect with what you have to say.

The essence of brand positioning

Brand positioning goes beyond simply determining where your brand stands in the market. It is a process that captures the essence of your brand identity and communicates it powerfully and convincingly to your target audience. It is the story you tell, the promise you make and, above all, the experience you consistently deliver. True brand positioning touches hearts, creates an emotional connection and builds trust.

In a constantly changing landscape, your positioning provides a solid foundation. But at the same time, the process requires attention, research and adaptation. By recognising and avoiding the most common misconceptions, you can build a stronger and more authentic connection with your audience.
